Source characteristics of the 16 June 2020 ML 5.4 earthquake and its significant aftershock sequences, northern Red Sea, Egypt

Abstract The northern Red Sea in eastern Egypt is one of the world’s newest marine basins. a very active seismic region and poses significant hazard to nearest cities on coast. On June 16, 2020, moderate earthquake ( M L = 5.4), as published by Egyptian National Seismic Network (ENSN), occurred followed several aftershocks, ranging magnitude from 2.0 3.4. best-fitting double-couple movement obtained using full waveform moment tensor inversion main indicated strike-slip movement, with minor normal component. two nodal shock planes were oriented NNE–SSW ESE–WNW, respectively. aftershocks sequences distribution did not coincide 16 Jun, 2020 earthquake, neither map view nor respect depth which may pointed secondary fault plane activation stress triggered mainshock. clustered at north western side earthquakes extend direction, supported that ESE–WNW plane. spectral parameters S-wave displacement spectra its aftershock determined method Brune’s $$\omega^{2}$$ ω 2 modulation. are flat frequency range 0.8 Hz each corner frequency, they decreased rapidly frequencies < 10 Hz. calculated moment, magnitude, source radius, drop vary 8.293E+18 7.541E+22 dyn·cm, 2.4 5.0, 2.2 8.2 Hz, 171 633 m, 0.02 13 MPa, equal or slightly higher than local reported ENSN. drops for increased increasing size.
